As a beta yes, but was released as an alpha in 99, free for download from counter-strike.com, I started with CS, then to CSS.
It featured Ts vs CTs everyone started with glocks and the only map was cs_desert, then came weaponsdepot

Forgive me if I remembered when I started playing and not when CSS was released. My mistake.
